In homage to the Empress Theodora from the lost culture of Byzantine, Lagerfeld's pre-fall 2011 collection is an edgy take on Chanel's signature sophisticated style.
The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, existed approximately between the years of 306AD to 1453AD and is well known for its colourful mosaic art, clearly a major influence in the collection.
Lagerfeld claimed to be inspired by the Empress Theodora as she was a circus artist that went on to be an Empress in the same way the Coco Chanel herself was a performer who became a "fashion Empress."
